Former US First Lady Rosalynn Carter begins receiving palliative care

Former First Lady of the United States, Rosalynn Carter, began receiving palliative care at her home in the US state of Georgia, the non-profit organization Carter Center announced this Friday (17).

“Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter began receiving hospice care at home. She and President Carter are spending time with each other and family,” the statement said.

“The Carter family continues to ask for privacy and is grateful for the outpouring of love and support,” concludes the note, released on behalf of Jason Carter, the Carters’ grandson.

Additional details about the 96-year-old former first lady were not immediately available.

The Carter Center announced in May that she had been diagnosed with dementia.

Speaking about his grandparents’ health, Josh Carter told People Magazine in an interview published in August that “it’s clear we’re in the final chapter.”

Rosalynn Carter, he said at the time, was aware of her diagnosis and signed the press release in which it was announced.

“She still knows who we are, for the most part — that we are family,” he told the magazine, adding, “My grandmother is still able to form new memories.”

The news of Rosalynn Carter receiving palliative care comes months after former US President Jimmy Carter, 99, also began receiving palliative care after a series of hospital stays.

“After a series of short hospital stays, former United States President Jimmy Carter decided today to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive palliative care rather than further medical intervention. He has the full support of his family and his medical team,” the February statement said.

The Carters are the longest-married US presidential couple, having celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary in July.

They recently made a surprise visit to the Plains Peanut Festival in Plains, Georgia ahead of the former president’s 99th birthday.

Carter, who turned 98 last year, became the oldest living American president in history following the death of George HW Bush, who died in late 2018 at age 94.

The country’s 39th president has kept a low public profile in recent years due to the coronavirus pandemic, but has continued to speak out about the risks to democracy around the world, a longtime cause of his.

President Joe Biden has been briefed on the couple’s health in recent months.

The president and first lady, Jill Biden, have “stayed in touch” with the former president’s team to “make sure his family knows that they are certainly in the president and first lady’s thoughts,” the president’s press secretary said.
