Former US Gymnastics doctor accused of child abuse stabbed 10 times in prison

Former USA Gymnastics (or United States Gymnastics Federation) physician Larry Nassar was assaulted during an incident at the federal prison where he is housed in Florida, according to two sources familiar with the incident.

Joe Rojas, president of the local prison guards union, told CNN that Nassar was stabbed a total of 10 times, twice in the neck, twice in the back and six times in the chest. Rojas credits correctional officers on the scene with saving Nassar’s life. Rojas says Nassar is in stable condition.

A statement from the Bureau of Prisons confirms: “On Sunday, July 9, 2023, at approximately 2:35 pm, an inmate was assaulted at Coleman II United States Penitentiary (USP) in Sumterville, Florida. The response team immediately initiated rescue measures. The team requested Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and lifesaving efforts continued.”

An internal investigation into the incident is ongoing, the statement said. The detainee, who a family source confirmed was Nassar, was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Nassar was sentenced in 2018 to up to 175 years in prison after more than 150 women and girls told the court that he sexually abused them over the past two decades.

Nassar pleaded guilty to seven counts of criminal sexual conduct in Ingham County, Michigan, and admitted to using his trusted medical position to assault and molest girls under the guise of medical treatment.

A total of 156 women gave victim testimonies in court, describing how they went to Nassar to receive treatment for sports injuries only to be sexually assaulted and said it was a form of treatment.

Many of the women said that when they spoke about their treatment, they were ignored or their concerns brushed aside by organizations in power, most notably USA Gymnastics, Michigan State University and the US Olympic Committee.

In 2021, Nassar’s victims reached a $380 million settlement with USA Gymnastics, the US Olympic Committee and their insurers.

The deal was part of USA Gymnastics’ plan to emerge from bankruptcy as the organization struggles to recover from the Nassar scandal.

In a separate case, Nassar was sentenced to 60 years in prison on federal child pornography charges.

The Associated Press was the first to report the attack.
