THE conflict between Israel and Hamas could cause a “nuclear war” if the Iran succeed in developing a nuclear bomb, warns former US Defense Intelligence Agency officer USA.
The warning comes as Israel’s crackdown on the Gaza Strip continues and the Israeli military awaits the “green light” from the political leadership for a ground invasion of the Palestinian enclave. Iran has warned that such a move could provoke the strong “axis of resistance” response (Iran, Hezbollah, Syria), but also of other countries in the Middle East.
The “rattling” from all parties involved continues and fears are intensifying that the conflict could become generalized with an ignition that would trigger major global implications, economic and military.
All this instability raises the specter of ‘nuclear war’he emphasized speaking to Express, former Defense Intelligence Agency officer Matt Shumaker;. He added: “The threat of nuclear war currently remains unlikely, but it has become a plausible threat in this crisis. Not just because of Iran’s nuclear weapons program, but because Israel is also a nuclear power.”
As Matt Shumaker points out, Iran’s foreign minister has warned Israel it would suffer “a huge blow” if it invades Gaza. “Iran would not remain a bystander in the conflict,” he predicted, adding:
“As a former intelligence officer and based on the news I’ve seen over the past year, some believe that if Iran has advanced its nuclear program, it could develop a working bomb within six weeks». He added: “This is an extremely short period of time and gives the West a small window if Iran chooses to do so.”
It is recalled that Iran’s nuclear program has been one of the most important areas of tension between Washington and Tehran. In fact, the former US president, Donald Trump, had withdrawn the US from the 2015 nuclear agreement between the two sides and imposed strong sanctions on Iran. For its part, Tehran, after the collapse of the agreement, proceeded to enrich uranium to higher levels, which could enable it to produce nuclear weapons.
In Matt Shumaker’s estimation the threat of a nuclear war does not come only from Iran. “Not far away, in Tartous, Syria, the Russia it has a strong naval presence and has the largest nuclear stockpile in the world,” he stressed. “Russia has supported pro-Palestinian and pro-Iranian causes, and to make matters even more complicated China, another nuclear power, has extensive interests in the region,” it said.
“Fifty percent of its oil and gas China comes from the Middle East, so if this were to become a regional war, China would certainly have an incentive to get involved to protect its energy resources.”
