Former US Vice President Mike Pence plans to launch campaign for 2024 election next week

Republican Mike Pence, former vice president of the United States, is expected to enter the 2024 presidential race against Donald Trump on June 7, two sources familiar with the situation told the agency.

Pence incurred Trump’s ire by refusing to support his effort to overturn the 2020 election results.

Pence’s campaign launch is expected to take place via a video and a speech in the state of Iowa, the sources said.

A staunch conservative who supported Trump throughout his term, Pence has increasingly distanced himself from the former Republican president since the election defeat, saying Trump’s encouragement of protesters who attacked the US Congress on Jan. endangered.

Trump has a huge polling lead in a Republican field that now has more than six declared candidates, a dynamic that could splinter primary opposition against the former president.

As of June 1, Pence’s polling average in the Republican field was less than 4%, compared to Trump’s 53%, according to polling average RealClearPolitics.

Pence has continued to embrace many of Trump’s policies while presenting himself as a balanced and open alternative to consensus. He has also appealed more directly to the evangelical Christian community, having spent significant time in recent months visiting megachurches across the country.
