Former Ukrainian lawmaker Alexei Kovalev, who sided with President Volodymyr Zelensky’s party but later supported Russian occupation forces in Kherson, was murdered on Sunday, Russian investigative authorities said today.
“Deputy head of the Kherson region’s civil-military administration in charge of agricultural affairs, Alexei Kovalev, surrendered after being wounded by bullets,” the Investigative Committee said on its Telegram account.
Kovalev was attacked while at home on Sunday, August 28. A young woman who lived with him was also killed, added the Commission, whose mandate is to investigate criminal acts.
The 33-year-old Kovalev was elected MP for Kherson in 2019 and had joined Zelensky’s party in the Ukrainian parliament. After the Russian invasion, at the end of February, and the conquest of Kherson by the Russians, it went over to the side of the occupying administration. At the end of June there was another attempt on his life.
Most of the Kherson region is controlled by the Kremlin, which is trying to Russify the region in anticipation of a possible annexation. Moscow has introduced the ruble as its currency and is urging residents to obtain Russian passports.
