On August 25, former Nickelodeon child star Alexa Nikolas and 30 members of her group calling themselves Eat Predators gathered outside Nickelodeon studios to protest alleged child abuse by Nickelodeon executives.
Protesters chanted “Protect survivors, not predators.” In addition, they demanded that anyone who has experienced sexual abuse at Nickelodeon be released from any confidentiality agreements.
However, the majority of the condemnations were directed at Dan Schneider, creator of Zoe 101, along with other popular Nick shows, including icarly, victorious Y Drake & Josh.
Alexa’s protest, best known for starring in the popular Show childish Zoey 101 alongside Jamie Lynn Spears, comes shortly after the release of the former star’s memoir icarly Jennette mccurdy, I’m Glad My Mom Died (I’m glad my mom is dead.)
In her book, Jennette addressed an intimidating Nickelodeon figure known as “The Creator” who goaded her into drinking alcohol and photographed her in a bikini while underage. In addition, she confessed that her executives offered her 300 thousand dollars not to speak publicly about her time on the famous television channel.
During the protest organized by Alexa, the 30-year-old actress told the TMZ portal that during her visit to Zoey 101 “She didn’t feel safe.” Additionally, she detailed the alleged abuse she suffered at the hands of Nickelodeon executives.
I didn’t feel safe on Nickelodeon as a kid. I didn’t feel safe with Dan Schneider. Every time I came to the set, my body would get extremely tense. Later in the second season [de ‘Zoey 101’], he and a group of executives made me cry alone in a room. I don’t think any child should experience something like that, especially when it comes from people who are supposed to be taking care of children on set.
Via a poster, Alexa referred to Dan Schneider as “the creator of childhood trauma,” an apparent reference to “The Creator,” whom Jennette referenced in her recent book.
Other signs included questions like “Is Nick a predator?” and “How many NDAs (non-disclosure agreements)?” Most of the signs were framed with the characteristic slime nickelodeon green
However, the most notable sign carried the slogan “Sickelodeon” (sick, “sick” in English) in front of the studio’s footer logo. Additionally, the back included Schneider’s translucent face.
In the past, the controversial former Nickelodeon producer has faced multiple accusations from viewers of having an inappropriate foot fetish due to the young stars of his shows participating in scenes involving bare feet.
In 2018, Dan Schneider and Nickelodeon severed their working relationship following an investigation that revealed the producer may be verbally abusive, although no evidence of sexual misconduct was revealed.
