Lights, camera, action. The images may look like the backstage of the recording of a commercial, but they are the promotion of a traffic safety project in Strength capital of Ceará.
The initiative, which is still in the research and testing phase, aims to reduce traffic accidents using an intelligent pedestrian lighting system. As the video shows.

To test the idea, the equipment was installed at the intersection of Praça Portugal and Av. Dom Luís, in the Aldeota neighborhood, a place with intense circulation of vehicles on curves, which can affect the visibility of the driver over the pedestrian.
The project is being developed by the Municipal Authority for Transit and Citizenship (AMC) in partnership with the American company Intelligent Security Systems (ISS), responsible for creating the system, SecurOS Soffit.
How it works?
The system has a set of lights that are activated by artificial intelligence when it identifies the human presence in the crosswalk. When someone walks by, dynamic lighting is activated over the person walking along the entire length of the lane.
The artificial intelligence is able to identify several pedestrians, even if they are traveling in opposite directions in the lane, which increases the visibility of those who walk on foot and draws the attention of the driver – especially at times of low circulation and less lighting, such as at dawn .
Fortaleza was chosen to receive the pilot due to road safety numbers in the capital: 2022 was the eighth consecutive year of reduction in traffic deaths. There were 158 deaths on the city’s roads, a number 58% lower than in 2014, in which 377 people lost their lives.
