The TIOBE Index assesses the popularity of programming languages by counting results containing the name of the search language in Google, Wikipedia, YouTube and other popular sites.
The index is calculated monthly, and the April ranking marked the unexpected return of the Fortran programming language to the top 20 list. Fortran appeared back in 1957. A year ago, this language was ranked 34, but its popularity continues to grow. Objective-C has finally dropped out of the top 20. This is not surprising given that Apple announced Swift as a replacement back in 2014.
The programming languages included in the TIOBE Top 20 are listed below:
- C
- Java
- Python
- C++
- C#
- Visual Basic
- JavaScript
- Assembly Language
- PHP
- SQL
- Classic Visual Basic
- Delphi/Object Pascal
- Ruby
- Go
- Swift
- R
- Groovy
- Perl
- MATLAB
- Fortran
The first five positions have not changed much over the past few years. Assembly Language entered the top ten, ahead of PHP and SQL.
