THE Dutch Government plans to reinstate restrictive measures in clubs and discos, music festivals and restaurants from today in response to the launch of its cases Covid-19 among young people, according to information from the Dutch media.
The Netherlands lifted most of the lockdown measures on June 26, as cases dropped, and about two-thirds of the population had received at least one dose of vaccine.
However, with bars, restaurants and nightclubs open, new cases have skyrocketed in recent months. More than 5,400 cases have been reported in the last 24 hours, compared to less than 1,000 a week ago.
Prime Minister Mark Rutte is expected to announce the decision to reinstate the restrictive measures at 18.00 today, according to the ANP news agency
The Netherlands is not expected to return to an extensive lockdown, but targeted measures will be taken to limit the spread of the virus among adolescents and young adults.
According to the RTL network, cafes and bars will close at midnight and outdoor events will be limited to a maximum of 1,000 people, while up to 500 people will be able to participate in indoor events.
About three-quarters of new cases in the Netherlands involve young people and more than 50% involve the Covid-19 Delta variant, according to the Ministry of Health.
