Reddit user bbmaster123 shared a very simple way to bring back the classic “Start” from Windows 10 to Windows 11 without the help of any third-party utilities. The method is experimental, but effective. The author does not guarantee that it will work for everyone, without exception, although he himself has successfully performed the procedure several times on a virtual machine.
💡 Attention! All changes to system files you make at your own peril and risk.
- Rename the following files / folders so that they end with .BACKUP:
C:WindowsShellExperience
C: Windows SystemApps Microsoft.Windows.StartMenuExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy
C: Windows SystemResoruces Windows.UI.ShellCommon Windows.UI.ShellCommon.pri
C:WindowsSystemResorucesWindows.UI.ShellCommonprisWindows.UI.ShellCommon.en-US.pri
C:WindowsSystem32StartTileData.dll
C:WindowsSystem32TileDataRepository - Replace the above files / folders with the ones contained in the leaked build. To do this, you first need to complete the process startmenuexperiencehost.exe.
- Restart File Explorer
Known Issues:
- delay when exiting the Start menu;
- pinning tiles only works from Start. Right-clicking on any shortcut on the desktop and choosing “Pin to Start” doesn’t work.
