João Carlos di Genio, one of the founders of the private education group Unip/Objetivo, died in São Paulo this Saturday (12), at the age of 82.
A statement from the group said that di Genio died of natural causes. He would have turned 83 on February 27, leaving a wife and three teenage children.
The wake takes place, this Sunday (13), until 4 pm at Funeral Home, in the Bela Vista neighborhood, in São Paulo.
“The achievement of the students made him smile”
In 1961, di Genio passed first in the medical course at two universities.
One of them was the USP (University of São Paulo), where in 1965, together with his colleague Drauzio Varella and doctors Roger Patti and Tadasi Itto, a small preparatory course for medical schools in the central region of São Paulo was founded.
“In 1970, Colégio Objetivo was created, with a high school curriculum. In 1972, the Faculdades Objetivo were established, the embryo of the future Universidade Paulista – Unip”, informs the Objetivo website.
Trained as a doctor, di Genio chose to pursue a career as a teacher. He “said that intelligence and talent should be treated as the wealth of a country”, according to a statement from the Unip/Objetivo group.
In 1988, the Objective faculties were transformed into the Universidade Paulista (Unip), which began its activities on November 9 of that year. Currently, according to the institution’s website, Unip has more than 220 thousand students enrolled and 65 units spread over 27 campuses.
“Di Genio valued science, technology, creativity. […] The achievement of the students made him smile and applaud. And it served as an inspiration for Di Genio and the school’s teachers to help make the dreams of each of the students come true”, concludes the group’s note.
