More than 200 people were emergency removed from a Delta jet on the runway at Atlanta airport this Friday morning (10), after an engine problem caused the takeoff to be aborted. The crash left four people injured, according to airline and airport officials.
A photo of passenger Curtis James showed slides displayed as people walked away from the Boeing 757 on the runway at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on a snowy morning.
“On takeoff, something went wrong and the engine caught fire,” James told CNN. “I had to empty the emergency plane.”
Airline and airport officials did not immediately say whether the engine problem was caused by a fire.
“The Delta crew followed established procedures to suspend the takeoff of Flight 2668 from Atlanta (ATL) to Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) following an indication of an engine problem,” Delta said in a statement.
The aircraft aborted takeoff at 9:10 a.m., according to the airport. “Four passengers report minor injuries. One was transported, the remaining three were treated at the scene.”
The aircraft carried 201 passengers, as well as two pilots and five flight attendants, according to Delta. The evacuated passengers were taken on the runway back to the terminal.
The incident occurred at an airport that was hit hard by winter weather. Atlanta airport had more than 400 flights canceled as of 1pm this Friday – more than 40% of flights scheduled at the airport, according to data from tracking website FlightAware. Across the country, more than 2,500 flights were canceled.
