Four dead, nine injured after car crashes into New York salon

Four people died and nine were injured after a minivan crashed into a nail salon in Long Island, New York, on Friday afternoon (28), the Fire Department chief said at a press conference.

“It appears a driver went through the entire building and we don’t know the cause at this time,” said Deer Park Fire Department Third Assistant Chief Dominic Albanese.

Reporters pressed the officer for more information about how the accident occurred and whether the car was out of control.

He replied that the case “is under investigation, we are not sure”.

The four dead were in the beauty salon when the accident happened, he added.

The driver of the minivan, who was partially conscious when first responders arrived at the scene, was taken to a local hospital, according to the fire chief. “It is unclear whether anyone other than the driver was in the minivan at the time of the accident,” he added.

The beauty salon is one of five stores in a small shopping area in Deer Park, Long Island. A series of parking spaces face the storefronts, just beyond the sidewalk.

“Around 150 firefighters and staff were on scene to deal with the incident,” Albanese said.

“This is very difficult for all firefighters and personnel on scene and we will be meeting with the crisis team tonight, for anyone in need, for all departments involved,” the fire chief told reporters.
