Four ships carrying Ukrainian food departed Ukraine’s Black Sea ports on Sunday as part of a deal to unblock the country’s maritime exports, Ukrainian officials said.
The four vessels were loaded with more than 160,000 tons of corn and other foodstuffs.
The resumption of grain exports is being overseen by a Joint Coordination Center (JCC) in Istanbul, Turkey, where Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish and United Nations (UN) officials are working.
The UN and Turkey brokered the deal last month after warnings from the Organization of possible famines in parts of the world due to a disruption in grain shipments from Ukraine, which reduced supplies and pushed up prices.
Before the invasion, Russia and Ukraine together accounted for nearly a third of global wheat exports.
The JCC said Saturday night that it had authorized a total of five new ships to leave through the Black Sea corridor: four leaving Chornomorsk and Odessa carrying 161,084 metric tons of food and one inbound.
Last week, four vessels left Ukraine under the agreement.
