Four out of ten Brazilians do not know how to ride a bicycle, reveals Ipsos

About four out of ten Brazilians (42%) do not know how to ride a bicycle. Brazilians are also among those who own bicycles the least among 30 countries evaluated. The data is from a new “Cycling Around the World” survey conducted by Ipsos.

According to the survey, the general average of people who answered “I know how to ride a bike” was 63% among the countries surveyed, led by Poland, which had a rate of 83% of people with the ability. Saudi Arabia had the worst number, with only 36% of positive responses.

Ipsos also asked if respondents had bicycles. Brazilians had one of the lowest rates in the study, with only 26% of people responding in the affirmative. In the ranking of countries present in the survey, Brazil is only ahead of Saudi Arabia (23%) and South Africa (20%).

Physical exercise

Regarding the use of bicycles for physical exercise, Brazil is in the last position among the surveyed nations. While the general average of people who use the bicycle to exercise was 28%, in Brazil the rate is 17%. Once again, Poland leads, with 61% of respondents claiming to practice the sport.

For short distances, up to two kilometers, 39% of Brazilians answered that they prefer to walk, 20% use their own car, 14% use public transport and only 10% answered that they use a bicycle.

About the withdrawal

The survey was conducted between March 25 and April 8, 2022. 20,057 people were interviewed online, approximately 1,000 of them in Brazil, aged between 16 and 74 years old. In Brazil, the margin of error is 3.5 percentage points.
