Today marks the thirtieth day of the Russian invasion, in Ukraine and at least in me, some questions arise, the answers to which, I can guess, but without evidence.
Writes Nikolaos Manolakos *
First Question : About fifteen days before the Russian invasion, NATO formally stated, clearly and explicitly, that it was not going to fight to protect Ukraine from foreign intervention, at a time when it was confidently warning of the day Russia would invade. in Ukraine.
On this basis, Russia had all the time at its disposal to do the “special operation” it wanted, without the concern of NATO military involvement.
Given that NATO’s global role includes the prevention of offensive actions, through its readiness to intervene at any time, its powerful armed forces, in the name of which target, was the deterrent abandoned?
Second Question: Ukraine, as a target of the Russian bear, is not news this year, but of 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea, after the lukewarm reaction of the West and with concise procedures. In those eight years, NATO, as well as the United States, flirted with Ukraine on an ongoing basis, leaving both Ukrainians and the rest of the world to believe that NATO membership was a matter of time and its arrival. at the right time. In the meantime, with or without opportunity, Russia has made it clear that it will not tolerate NATO expansion to the East and that Ukraine’s entry was a red line for it.
Given that NATO argued that every state has a right to self-determination and did not explicitly reject the case of Ukraine’s accession, the proxy war (Ukrainians) was the appropriate plan to deal with a possible Russian invasion?
Third Question The European Union as a whole, but also its states individually, with Germany first, had identified for many years the problem of their dependence on Russia’s oil and gas.
On the basis of, over time, growing Russian aggression, the manifestations of which no one could have predicted with certainty, why did the EU and its leading states not take the necessary steps to break free or become less critical? Why did Germany insist on ambitious energy plans, with new pipelines, at a time when the US was warning of the dangers of this policy?
Fourth Question The European Union had realized that in order to play a dominant role on the world stage, it would have to transform itself by pursuing a common foreign policy and a common army.
Is it possible that the leading EU states have accepted the current model of union, which is largely obsolete and ineffective? And if they had realized that, what are the reasons that the European Union is still without a real foreign policy and a common defense? Who will take them seriously on the international chessboard?
FOR THESE
In recent years, Greece has been threatened by Turkey, with amputation of its sovereignty and sovereign rights. The example of a hardline Ukraine should wake us up, as once again, military force imposes situations and the law of the powerful perpetrator prevails, despite international outcry, the apparent collapse of international law and the support of the international community. to the weak victim.
It is now, or certain, that in the possible event, however, and not in the near future, of Turkey’s aggressive attack on our country, the allies, the international organizations, NATO, the current EU, will provide abundant rhetoric, ample humanitarian aid and possibly some military assistance, but on the crucial point, we alone will raise the cross of protection of our homeland.
Therefore, all political parties should realize that the preparation of Greek society, but also the strengthening of our armed forces, in personnel and means, is a supreme obligation and does not allow any oligarchy or second thought.
And fortunately, the current government realized this in time and took the necessary steps to cure the “bad texts” of recent years.
The effort must continue and the support of the entire political world is essential.
For the good of our country!
