The Civil Police indicted four youths of legal age for triple-qualified homicide on suspicion of involvement in the death of environmentalist Adolfo Duarte, known as Ferrugem. The crime took place at the Billings dam, in São Paulo, in August of this year.
Rust’s body was missing for 5 days. He was found with signs of mechanical asphyxia and no signs of drowning, according to the autopsy report. The four suspects were even temporarily detained on August 24.
In testimony, the young people claimed an accident and said that there was a bump in the boat they were on, causing Adolfo to fall into the water and disappear. A reenactment of the facts was held on 6 September.
One of the suspects told delegate Jakelline Barros, who is coordinating the case, that he saw one of his colleagues “mocking around” with the environmentalist on the boat. Asked by his lawyer what it would effectively mean to “move”, he replied that at no time did he see his colleague assaulting Ferrugem.
Now, the Civil Police has filed a request for preventive detention. The defense of the young people says that it will now await the manifestation of the Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding the representation of the delegate of the case and then it will challenge the reports and statements made without the presence of the defense.
At the age of 41, Ferrugem was president of the NGO Meninos da Billings, which works to preserve the region of the dam with a focus on environmental education in the spring.
