The State Department was recently the target of a cyberattack and alerts for a possible breach were issued by the Cyber Security Administration of the US Department of Defense, a Fox News journalist wrote on Twitter.
It is not clear when the violation was discovered, but it is believed to have happened about two weeks ago, according to the journalist.
“The State Department’s operation to oust Americans and Afghan allies has not been affected,” he said.
The extent of the breach, the investigations into the origin of the attack, the efforts made to contain it and any continuing risk to businesses remain unclear.
“The Department takes seriously its responsibility to secure its information and is constantly taking steps to ensure that information is protected. “For security reasons, we are not in a position to discuss the nature or scope of any alleged cybersecurity incidents at this time,” a State Department spokesman told Fox News.
