Foxconn announced that the first electric vehicles built using its open hardware and software platform will be released by the end of this year.

“This year will be an important year for Foxconn’s EV efforts. In the fourth quarter, there will be two to three electric vehicle models using our MIH platform, ”Foxconn chairman Young Liu told reporters at the company’s headquarters in New Taipei.
The first three models of electric vehicles on the MIH platform will include an electric bus and two passenger vehicles for the Taiwanese and Chinese markets, Liu said.

Foxconn is banking on its open platform, dubbed MIH, to drive business growth through the electric vehicle market, which could provide a new revenue stream to offset the slowdown in the smartphone market. The customizable platform, which includes chassis, electronics and self-driving support, is designed to reduce the time and resources required by automakers to launch new electric vehicles. Foxconn invites suppliers from various industries to join the MIH-based alliance, which was launched last October. According to Foxconn, the alliance has attracted more than 700 companies from around the world to date, including Qualcomm, MediaTek, Arm, AWS and STMicroelectronics.
Foxconn plans to host the first MIH conference next month, where members will discuss their plans.
