FPS Boost for new Xbox may lower resolutions in games

A week ago, Microsoft re-introduced FPS Boost technology for the next generation of Xbox game consoles. Recall that the technology allows you to increase the frame rate in older games. In some, up to 60 fps, and in some up to 120 fps.

However, there are only a few such games so far, and these are all games for the Xbox One. As it turned out, technology is not so simple. First, so far it really only concerns Xbox One games, although Microsoft is working to add to the list and projects for older generations of consoles.

Besides, not all games can implement FPS Boost.

The technology we came up with is not suitable for all games. We do have some games, and to be honest, I play one. She’s super cool, buttery smooth, but then we suddenly realize that this character in the corner is animating twice as fast. Or maybe after three quarters of playing the game, we suddenly find a physics-breaking error because the system launches the game so quickly that the game doesn’t really know how to handle it.

As a result, you shouldn’t expect that all your favorite games from the previous generation of Xbox will sooner or later receive support for the new technology.

In addition, it turns out that frame rates don’t always go up for free with a better platform. Sometimes FPS Boost requires lowering the resolution.

In some cases, we’ve actually determined that if we lower the resolution a little while running the game, we can achieve an effective doubling of the frame rate. So this is a great example of why we gave gamers a choice. Because some players will prefer resolution over frame rate, while other players will prefer frame rate over resolution. So we put control in the hands of the player

It remains to be seen when, in which games and by how much the resolution is reduced. Perhaps this always happens at all, which obviously not everyone will like.
