A 24-year-old young woman of Kurdish origin from northern Iraq, who was among the 27 migrants killed in crossing the Channel that separates France from Britain this week, became the first victim of the wreck named by the British media.
The migrants lost their lives when the inflatable boat they were on sank as they attempted their perilous journey on Wednesday.
This was the biggest recorded tragedy on one of the busiest sea lanes.
Mariam Nouri Mohamed Amin, 24, made the trip to see her fiancé, the BBC reported, citing members of her family and a close friend.
“When she left Kurdistan she was very happy, she could not believe she would meet him,” said the victim’s friend Iman Hassan, according to British television, adding that her fiancé was already living in Britain.
“He tried to have a better life, he chose the United Kingdom, but he died,” Hassan said.
This recent tragedy has further increased tensions in France’s relations with Britain with French President Emmanuel Macron yesterday calling on London to “get serious” otherwise it will be left out of the discussions on finding a solution to the issue of migration flows through the Channel.
