At France a convicted murderer of hers was arrested ‘Ndrangheta who had been on the run from the authorities for 17 years. THE Edgardo Grecowho is considered a major figure in Italian mafiaworked as a cook in pizzeria at least the last three years.

The arrest in Saint-Etienne is the second mafia boss arrested by Italian authorities in a few weeks. after that of capo Matteo Masina Denaro, who had been wanted for three decades.

Greco was a member of the organized crime group ‘Ndrangheta, from the Calabria region of southern Italy, which is now the most powerful mafia in Italy and their tentacles spread across Europe and South America.

The 63-year-old mobster was wanted for killing two brothers during a “mob war” between two gangs in the early 1990s. When a judge first issued a warrant for his arrest in 2006, Greco went on the run.

Eight years later, he settled in the French city of Saint-Etienne, southwest of Lyon, eventually taking a job as a cook in an Italian restaurant.

Greco assumed a new identity, calling himself Paolo Demitrio. By now he had been sentenced to life in prison in Italy and a European arrest warrant had been issued for him. But in July 2021 he was, it seems, quite sure of his new nickname and appeared in a local newspaper, talking about his restaurant’s “local and homemade recipes” such as ravioli, risotto and tagliatelle.

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piandendozzi praised police for bringing to justice one of Italy’s worst criminals, while the head of the Calabria region, Roberto Occiuto, said the arrest underlined Italy’s commitment to fighting all forms of organized crime.
