France: At dawn, Macron signed the law to increase the retirement limit

In the early hours of Holy Saturday, Mr Emmanuel Macron the law on increasing the retirement limit, with the unions of workers in France to prepare for new mobilizations in view of May Day.

This development came a few hours later France’s Constitutional Court upheld the Macron government’s plans. In particular, members of the French Constitutional Council criticized some minor aspects of the reform, but did not reject the main measure that raises the legal retirement age to 64 from the current 62, according to the Council’s press release.

Before the ratification by the Constitutional Court is announced, the French president had invited French unions to meet him on Tuesday. “It will necessarily be the beginning of a cycle that the president and the government will continue in the coming weeks with the social partners. Élysée’s door will remain open, without conditions, for this dialogue,” said the entourage of the French head of state.

French unions, for their part, have called on Macron not to issue the pension reform, and have warned they will refuse to meet with the government before May Day.

“In the face of the mass rejection of this reform, the trade union committee formally requests that the law not be passed, the only way to calm the anger expressed in the country”refers to the press release of the trade union committee which decided “not to agree to meet with the government” until May 1, Labor Day, for which it calls for a “great mobilization”.

The opposition is not backing down

France’s biggest opposition parties are determined to continue their fight against the pension reform plan just approved by the Constitutional Council.

“The fight goes on”radical left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon reacted, while far-right leader Marine Le Pen said that “the political future of pension reform is not sealed”following the decision of the Constitutional Council that came after months of protests and political wrangling against this flagship bill of Emmanuel Macron’s second five-year term.
