The Luxembourg foreign minister called on the French to block the far-right leader Marine Le Pen, whose rise to the French presidency would lead to “the overthrow of order in Europe” and the “edifice of peace”.
“I hope that the outcome (of the election) will be such that we do not have Le Pen in the European Union as President of France,” said Jean Asselborn, attending a meeting of European foreign ministers.
“It will not only be a reversal of order in Europe as a edifice of values, of peace, but it would put the very essence of the European Union in another direction. The French must prevent it,” he added.
Describing the far-right performance in the first round of the French presidential election as “very, very worrying”, Jean Asselborn said France was “in a kind of political civil war”.
“As a heartfelt European, it is very important for me to remain united and strong as Europeans, especially in these difficult times,” said German Foreign Minister Alena Berbock.
