The European Commission is taking a risk when finalizing a trade agreement with Mercosur in the face of reservations from several European Union countries, France warned this Thursday (05), as the bloc’s Chief Executive, Ursula von der Leyen , disembarked in Uruguay to conclude the agreement.
“The Commission is assuming a responsibility and a risk, because the final content of the negotiated agreement has not been presented to any member state, which will have to be done,” said a French diplomatic source.
“The decision to sign belongs to the member states in the (EU) council, so it is not the end of the story,” the source said, adding that other countries in the European bloc had expressed reservations about the agricultural rules.
