France: Black record with almost 180,000 cases in a 24 hour period

A new Covid-19 daily case record was set by France, with 179,807 infections in a 24-hour period, by far the largest number recorded in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

The previous record, with 104,611 infections, was recorded on Saturday.

Despite the eruption, the number of patients in hospitals remains well below the record levels recorded in previous waves. 3,416 people (+83) are being treated in intensive care units, while at the beginning of April 2020 their number exceeded 7,000.

On Monday, the government announced a series of new measures to curb the spread of the Omicron variant, such as the mandatory use of a mask outdoors and the extension of telework for at least three days a week. The number of people allowed to participate in rallies is also reduced, while the consumption of food and drink on public transport is prohibited.
