France-Center-Right: What does Pekres’ candidacy for the presidential election mean?

The French right chooses the woman who governs the Paris region to confront Macron.

French Republicans have nominated a female presidential candidate for the first time in a by-election, according to a Bloomberg report.

Valerie Pecresse won the last round of the Conservative ballot on Saturday with 61% of members supporting her.

Eric Ciotti, a lawmaker from southern France who is often compared to far-right rival Eric Zemmour, got 39%.

By electing the leader of the Paris region over Shiotti, the party of General Charles de Gaulle, Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy has chosen not to take part in the massive vote for the extremists. ) and instead chose a candidate who could compete with Macron from the “pool” of moderate voters.

Pekres, 54, is betting she can revitalize the party that was set to run for president again in 2017 until her predecessor, François Fillon, was undermined by a corruption scandal that opened the door to Macron.

“What is striking is that this seemingly old-fashioned right has chosen a woman,” said Opinionway’s Bruno Jeanbart. “This will represent a strong change.”

An adviser to Macron’s government recently said that Pekres could pose a serious threat to his re-election. The president declined to comment during an official visit to Saudi Arabia.

Pekres said Saturday that she would save public services, including hospitals, schools and the legal system, defend social justice, reaffirm the value of work, elevate France’s global standing and reform Europe.

“Dear friends, the Republican right is back,” he said.

The latest Ifop poll released on November 28 showed that Pekres with 10% of the vote is in fourth place behind Macron with 25%. His longtime rival and nationalist leader Marin Le Pen scored 19.5% in the poll and Zemour 15%.

Pekres has the most influence among people aged 65 and over, who tend to be the most frequent voters, as well as right-wing voters.

An Opinionway analyst said the way forward for her is to flirt with those who believe Macron has not done enough for security, immigration and public finances, while also convincing Le Pen supporters that she is more likely to win. .

This is what Sarkozy, Pekres’s former mentor, did in 2007.

That year, the Socialists chose Segolene Royal as the first woman to head their presidential ticket. His candidate for 2022 is the mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo. The party dominated French politics along with the Republicans until Macron’s central term.

A graduate of the famous Ecole Nationale d’Administration, which was also attended by Macron and several of his predecessors, Pekres lives in the affluent city of Versailles.

He held two ministerial posts, including the budget, under Sarkozy.

While France hit a record of public debt and a huge deficit during her tenure, Pekres’s ties to the last Republican president helped her build a national brand.

In June, voters re-elected her to run Ile-de-France, France’s richest and most populous region, by a wide margin.

In her speech, she attacked Lepen and Zemour, saying that you do not have to be an extremist to be on the offensive and you do not have to be offensive to convince voters.
