France elections: Macron loses control of the National Assembly in a ‘democratic shock’

The French President, Emmanuel Macron, has suffered a severe setback after losing control of the National Assembly in Sunday’s legislative elections. His defeat threatens the political stability of the country.

Macron’s group won 245 seats out of 577, losing the absolute majoritybut managed to keep the largest block.

Initial projections by pollsters Ifop, OpinionWay, Elabe and Ipsos indicated that Macron’s Ensemble alliance would win between 230 and 250 seats, the left-wing alliance Nupes between 141 and 175 and Les Republicains between 60 and 75.

The Minister of Economy, Bruno LeMairehas rated the result “democratic shock“and added that if other blocs don’t cooperate, “this would block our ability to reform and protect the French”.

For her part, the Prime Minister, Elizabeth Bornehas said that “the result is a risk for our country in the face of the challenges we have to face“, and added that as of Monday, Macron’s side will work to seek alliances.
