With the French presidential race looming in the run-up to Sunday’s first round of elections, the two favorites, President Emanuel Macron and far-right candidate Marine Le Pen, voiced their opposition in today’s interviews, refuting each other’s arguments.
Polls have long predicted that Macron will win a second term.
According to the latest poll conducted by Kea Partners on behalf of Les Echos and Radio Classique, these two candidates are said to be going to the second round. The same poll gives in the first round Macron 28%, Le Pen 22%, Melanson 14%, Zemour 9% and Pekres also 9%.
Macron appears to be ahead of Le Pen in the second round with 53% based on this poll conducted on a sample of 1,666 respondents during the period 1-4 April.
“Do you realize what a pension at 65 means? It’s just completely unfair,” Le Pen told BFM TV, criticizing the French president’s plan to raise the legal age limit for getting a full pension from 62 to 65.
Lepen is committed to keeping the limit at 62 years and reducing it to 60 years for those who started working before the age of 20.
Asked about his plan for pension reform, Macron told France Inter: “Those who tell you that we can keep the pension system in place are lying to you.”
Raising the retirement age, with the exception of those who do heavy work or work longer hours than others, is necessary to make the system viable and increase low pensions, the French president said.
Macron, who launched his election campaign late last month, has said he will raise the retirement age, cut taxes and further relax labor market rules, seeking a new mandate to move forward with reforms. are business friendly.
Even if Macron wins a second term, according to opinion polls, the issue of pension reform, which haunted his first term, could still be a problem, given the widespread opposition.
A first big challenge for Macron will be a victory for the center-right party of La Republique en Marche – which has failed in all recent local elections – in the June parliamentary elections.
