For women who intend to do so, aborting will soon be less complicated. In France, however, not in Italy. Yes, because while in our country making use of this right becomes more complex every day due to the very high number of conscientious objectors and many other more or less veiled attempts at obstruction, beyond the Alps the step is decidedly different.
The National Assembly has indeed approved with 135 votes in favor, 47 against and 9 abstentions, new provisions on abortionwhich, taking into account today’s needs and the criticalities of the measures in force up to now, reinforces this right.
What changes in France
The transalpine country is one of the most attentive to abortion matters, to the point that access rules and methods have already been changed several times since its legalization in 1975.
The most important news of the new law, born from the initiative of the deputy Albane Gaillot and to the collaboration of feminist collectives and health professionals, is the extension of the legal limit to terminate a pregnancy by the surgical method, which passes from the current 12 to 14 weeks.
This measure responds to the requests of many associations that in recent months had denounced the fact that every year about 4-5,000 women are forced to abort illegally or to turn to other countries precisely because they arrived at the time of the abortion after 12 weeks of gestation.
The new law it also widens the pool of health professionals who can perform the intervention, giving this faculty, in addition to doctors, to midwives and obstetricianswhich from 2016 and until today could only deal with pharmacological abortions, or give the necessary drugs, the mifepristone and the misoprostoland assist in the practice.
Always with a view to facilitating the voluntary termination of pregnancy, France also asked regional health agencies to create databases on a voluntary basis with names and contact details of professionals who practice abortions, so as to make them easily available.
Last but not least the novelty contained in the French law, theabolition of the reflection period of two days after the psychological consultation, mandatory for minors.
Some measures will enter into force immediately while others will require implementing decrees to be forthcoming.
Satisfaction by the petitioner Albane Gaillot who commented with a post on Twitter: «This law will be a milestone for women’s rights. The text of progress for the whole of society belongs to those who defend the right to abortion ”.
