France, Germany and Spain have announced that they have reached an agreement to sign contracts for the design of the Future Air Combat System. (Future Combat Air System ή SCAF) which will lead to the construction of a prototype in 2027, after intensive negotiations and industrial competition, reports APE.
“Talks in recent months have led to a balanced agreement between the partners on the next stage of the demonstration phase of the program,” said the defense ministers of France, Germany and Spain. Florence Parley, Annegret Krab-Karenbauer and Margarita Robles respectively.
These “phase 1B” studies concern expenditure of € 3.5 billion by 2024 and are distributed and funded equally by the three countries. A “phase 2” study then envisions the development by 2027 of a prototype to test the effectiveness of the technologies that will have been used.
The agreement was needed to ensure that the program is implemented in the coming years and that it receives the approval of the German parliament for the part of funding concerning Berlin before the summer recess in late June and in the run-up to the parliamentary elections of autumn with uncertain result.
According to the French Minister of Defense, contracts with industries will be able to follow “at the end of the summer”.
The Future Air Combat System, launched in 2017 by France and Germany and will replace Rafale and Eurofighter fighter jets in 2040.
More than a new generation fighter jet, the program is a “systems system” that frames an aircraft with accompanying drones. The whole is connected through a “cloud battle” to the other military means used in a military operation.
