France: Government pivot and concessions to far-right National Alarm to avoid motion of no confidence

Facing the risk of a motion of no confidence, the French government announced today that there will be no change to the state’s share of pharmaceutical spending in 2025, scrapping plans to tighten the system as part of a wider drive to cut costs. The move is seen as a further concession to the far-right National Alarm (RN) which has threatened to move a no-confidence motion against the government if the party’s demands for next year’s budget are not met National Alarm spokesman Philippe Bayard welcomed the move. “This is good news. When someone wants, they can,” Bayard said, adding that the RN still wants Prime Minister Michel Barnier to make a U-turn on linking pensions to inflation. Earlier today, RN president Jordan Bardela said that unless a “last-minute miracle” occurs, his party could move forward with a no-confidence motion against the government within the next few days.
