France: Greenpeace reports that a cargo enriched with uranium from Russia has arrived in France

A “big” load enriched with uranium from the Russia arrived today at Franceas the non-governmental organization complains Greenpeace. According to Greenpeace, this confirms, the France’s dependence on the Russian nuclear industrya sector that has not been subject to international sanctions since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“This morning at Dunkirk the Russian cargo ship Baltiyskiy 202 from St. Petersburg unloaded 25 cylindrical containers containing enriched uranium for the French group Orano (formerly Areva),” Greenpeace complains in a statement issued a day before the French National Assembly votes on the bill to strengthen the nuclear energy industry. The case was discovered by an AFP journalist.

According to the organization, the cylinders were then loaded onto trucks bound for its factory Pierlatt in Drome. It is, according to Greenpeace, about 7th load of uranium arriving in France from Russia since the start of the Russian offensive against Ukraine.

“This is new proof that the French nuclear industry continues to do business with Rosatom‘, the Russian nuclear giant, said Pauline Boaget, campaigner for nuclear and energy transition. “Continuing nuclear trade with Russia in wartime is scandalous“, he said.

Greenpeace’s investigation into the relationship between France and Russia

According to APE-MPE, in a report dated March 11, Greenpeace had denounced the relationship of France’s dependence on the Russian nuclear industrya domain that not touched by international sanctionsin contrast to the hydrocarbon sector.

The non-governmental organization has revealed that France has procured from Russia “a third of the enriched uranium needed for one year by French nuclear power plants”, corresponding to tripling of the quantity, for 2022.

THE French government rejected the complaints assuring that “our country does not depend on no way from Russia for the operation of the electronuclear park” and “has succeeded in diversifying the power sources”.

“If the government wants to be consistent with its support for the Ukrainian population, it should be to break all contracts with the RosatomPauline Boaget said.
