France has frozen more than 800 million euros in assets of Russian oligarchs

France has frozen more than 800 million euros in assets belonging to Russian oligarchs, government spokesman Gabriel Attal said on Wednesday. He did not provide details on the ownership of these assets.

On Sunday (20), Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire told the LCI TV channel that France had so far frozen around 150 million euros in private bank accounts at French financial institutions in France, and 539 million euros euros in real estate on French territory, corresponding to around thirty properties or apartments.

France also immobilized two Russian-owned yachts worth around €150 million, Le Maire said, adding that around €850 million of Russian assets had been frozen. In practice, the measure prevents goods and assets from being used, traded or monetized.

The French measure follows a trend launched by the United States and other European countries, with sanctions on individuals close to the government of Vladimir Putin.

French President Emmanuel Macron told a March 11 meeting that “all options for sanctions on Russia are on the table.”

This Wednesday (23), protesters tried to prevent a yacht of the oligarch Roman Abramovich from docking in Turkey, with anti-war messages. The Russian owned English football club Chelsea until he was sacked by the Premier League board. The club was put up for sale.
