France: Hundreds of protesters outside the Austrian embassy in Paris

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Austrian embassy in Paris today to protest Austria’s new restrictions on Covid-19, fearing that France might be the next country to reinstate measures aimed at inhibiting the spread of the virus.

The mobilization, which ended without incident, was organized by far-right politician Florian Filippo, who was at the forefront of protests in France against the healthcare pass and the vaccination certificate.

Europe has once again become the focus of the pandemic, with the result that countries are restoring restrictions in the run-up to Christmas. Earlier this week, Austria imposed a lockdown on unvaccinated citizens.

A poll by the Elabe Institute, published today in the French media, shows that 60% of respondents support a new anti-Covid lockdown in France for those who have not been fully vaccinated against the virus.

However, those protesting outside the Austrian embassy in Paris said such measures were discriminatory, expressing fears that the government of President Emanuel Macron could take similar measures.

“What is happening in Austria is very, very worrying,” said Martin Sirassa, a 43-year-old teacher.

“First of all, we have to support the Austrian people. I think we are exploring the depths of terror in terms of what is being proposed, we are exploring the depths of discrimination and we are obviously afraid that this will happen in France,” he added.
