France has reported an average of nearly 90,000 new cases of coronavirus in the last seven days, a figure that shows a 36% increase from the previous week, when the government lifted most of the health protocol measures just before the country’s elections.
The new 24-hour cases announced yesterday, Sunday, stood at 81,283, pushing the seven-day average to 89,002, compared to just over 60,000 new cases a week earlier. The number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants also reached its highest level since February 18.
The government of French President Emmanuel Macron, who will run for re-election in less than three weeks, has decided to lift most restrictions on halting COVID-19 on March 14, citing a positive trend.
This means that people in France will no longer have to wear masks indoors, with the exception of public transport, hospitals and other medical facilities. The government also lifted the demand for vaccination passes in places such as bars and cinemas.
New hospital admissions – considered a significant indicator by French Health Minister Olivier Veran – fell by just 1.7% from week to week, the slowest since the beginning of February, showing potentially a reversal of previous trends.
The recent increase in new cases was particularly significant in the Alsace region of eastern France, one of the worst-hit areas at the start of the pandemic, where authorities recorded well over 1,000 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
In Germany, new cases have also risen in recent days, reaching a new record of an average of about 220,000 new cases in the last 7 days, according to data from the Robert Koch Institute.
