French health authorities have announced 18,853 new cases of coronavirus, with data showing a weekly increase in infections for the 10th consecutive time, on the day the most restrictive measures for the pandemic were lifted.
The weekly index of new infections, which smoothes out any irregularities in the daily reports, reached 65,882, the highest level since February 24.
The number of patients treated with Covid-19 rose to 20,925 (eight more than yesterday, Sunday), a number that is still 37% lower than at the peak of the pandemic when 33,497 were recorded in November 2020. But it increased by a second consecutive day, for the first time since the beginning of February. At the same time, the rate of weekly reduction in the number of hospitalized patients has slowed down in the last nine days.
A change in infection-related trend is usually visible two weeks later in hospital admissions data.
In the last 24 hours another 185 patients have died due to complications of Covid-19 (the largest increase in the last ten days), bringing the total death toll in France to 140,294.
