France: Investigation against the former archbishop of Paris for sexual assault

His prosecution Paris started preliminary investigation against the former archbishop of the French capital, Michelle Opeti, for her crime sexual assault at the expense of a vulnerable person.

At the end of November 2021, as APE-MPE reminds, Opeti submitted his resignation to Pope Franciswho immediately accepted her, since many newspapers wrote that he was having an affair with a woman, something he himself categorically denied. According to the news channel BFMTV, the former archbishop had a relationship with a vulnerable person who is under judicial protection.

A img with knowledge of the case said Opeti, 72, had been corresponding with the woman, whose consent would have to be confirmed because of her mental state.

We don’t know if a lawsuit has been filedso we cannot make any statement on the matter,” said Jean Renard, Opeti’s lawyer, who had also come under fire for the archdiocese’s human reimgs management.

Opeti joined the clergy at an advanced age – he was 44 when he was ordained, after practicing medicine for 11 years – and took over as archbishop of Paris in December 2017. During his tenure he had to manage the fire in the Notre-Dame de Parisin 2019. He is known for his hard-line stances on family and bioethics and has regularly supported “pro-life marches,” anti-abortion movements.
