France issues international arrest warrant against Carlos Ghosn

French prosecutors have issued international arrest warrants for Carlos Ghosn and four other individuals they say are linked to a car dealership in Oman, claiming they would help Ghosn funnel millions of euros from Renault, according to people familiar with the matter.

An investigating magistrate has issued five international arrest warrants against Ghosn, the former head of Nissan and Renault, and the current owners or former directors of the Omani-based company Suhail Bahwan Automobiles, according to the prosecutor’s office in the Paris suburb of Nanterre. to the Wall Street Journal.

They allege that Ghosn moved millions of dollars of Renault funds through the car dealership for his personal use, including the purchase of a yacht.

Ghosn escaped a trial on charges of financial irregularities in Japan and went to Lebanon hiding in a box of musical equipment. After escaping, he initially welcomed the French investigation, saying that he believed in the French justice system, which would allow him to prove his innocence.

A spokeswoman for Ghosn declined to comment on the arrest warrants. The most recent arrest warrant does not fundamentally change Ghosn’s personal situation. After fleeing Japan, he remains in Lebanon, where he lives as an international fugitive in a house bought by the Japanese automaker. Lebanon does not extradite its citizens, and Ghosn has citizenship in the country, France and Brazil.

People close to Ghosn do not rule out going to France to face trial one day, although they say that is made more difficult by the fact that Lebanon currently has his passports. It could also mean being away from your wife for an extended period.
