France: Jean-Luc Melanson calls on PM to ask for vote of confidence from National Assembly

French Prime Minister Elizabeth Bourne must abide by tradition and ask for a vote of confidence in the newly elected National Assembly, left-wing leader Jean-Luc Melanson said today, noting that the government no longer has a majority.

“Bourne will be defeated,” he said.

Melanson also told reporters that the parties forming the left-wing Nupes alliance would have to form a joint parliamentary group, the second largest in the National Assembly, after President Emanuel Macron’s centrists. This proposal, he explained, is mainly based on the fact that, separately, the parliamentary group of each party (Socialists, Greens, Communists) would have fewer members than the far-right National Alarm of Marin Le Pen.
