France: Le Pen and former MEPs accused of embezzling 600,000 euros from European funds

The far-right candidate in the French presidential election, Marine Le Pen, and former MEPs of her party are accused of embezzling around 600,000 euros from European funds during their term as MEPs.

The accusation is being made by the European Anti-Fraud Office (Olaf), according to a new report revealed by the French news website Mediapart and handed over to French justice.

The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed to AFP that it had received the petition on March 11 and that it was being analyzed.

Olaf’s new report, excerpts from Mediapart expenditure or payments for the benefit of commercial enterprises affiliated with its party, the National Alarm, and the far-right political group in the European Parliament, the Europe of Nations and Freedom.

The report by the European Anti-Fraud Office concerns Marin Le Pen, three former MEPs – Jean-Marie Le Pen’s father, Louis Ali’s ex-partner and Bruno Golnis, a member of the National Alarm Bureau – and the Europe political group of Nations and Freedom.

According to the report, the presidential candidate of the National Alarm is allegedly charged with embezzling 137,000 euros of public money of the Strasbourg Parliament during her term as MEP from 2004 to 2017.

Since 2017, Marin Le Pen has been prosecuted in the context of another investigation into virtual jobs in the European Parliament of her National Alarm partners.

Rodolfo Boselli’s lawyer has expressed surprise at the timing of the revelation, amid the run-up to the French presidential election, in which Marine Le Pen is facing outgoing French President Emmanuel Macron.

Her lawyer also expressed surprise at how Olaf operates on issues related to events dating back more than ten years. Rodolfo Boselli said that Olaf’s investigation began in 2016 and that Marin Lepen answered the European agency’s questions in writing in March 2021.
