French far-right leader Marine Le Pen insisted on Tuesday (2) that an absolute majority in France’s legislative body was still possible for her National Rally (RN) party, as campaigning continued ahead of the second round of voting in French parliamentary elections.
“Of course we cannot accept going into government if we cannot act,” Le Pen told France Inter radio. “If we cannot act, that would be, for me, the worst betrayal we can commit against our voters.”
The RN made historic gains by winning the first round of French parliamentary elections on Sunday (30), but the final outcome will depend on days of alliance-building ahead of the July 7 run-off.
RN leader Jordan Bardella, the party’s candidate for prime minister, said he would not accept the post if the party did not win an absolute majority in the National Assembly.
Asked whether she would be part of Bardella’s list of ministers if her protégé were named prime minister, Le Pen said she would not be “prime minister number two” and would instead lead the RN’s group of lawmakers in the National Assembly.
