France: Left-wing coalition vows to withdraw candidates if it comes in third place

The left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) coalition will withdraw its candidates if they come third in the first round, said Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the radical left party France Insoumise.

“Our directive is simple and clear: not one more vote for the National Rally,” Mélenchon said. Still, that is unlikely, given that third place is likely to go to the centrist coalition led by President Emmanuel Macron.

Exit poll

Polls estimate RN with around 34% of the votes, according to different surveys carried out by Ipsos, Ifop, OpinionWay and Elabe.

The rate is higher than that of leftist rivals — in a coalition that includes the radical left — and centrists, with President Emmanuel Macron’s Juntos alliance, whose bloc is expected to receive 20.5% to 23% of the votes. The New Popular Front, a hastily assembled left-wing coalition, was expected to win around 29% of the vote, polls showed.
