French President Emmanuel Macron said today that reviving the 2015 deal on Iran’s nuclear program is “still possible” provided it is “achieved as quickly as possible” after talks on Saturday with his Iranian counterpart Ibrahim Rice.
“Several months after the suspension of negotiations in Vienna,” Macron “expressed his frustration at the lack of progress (in the talks) and insisted to President Raisi that he needed to make the clear choice to conclude the deal and bring Iran back to implementation of its commitments on its nuclear program,” the French presidency added in a statement.
In June, Iran began removing virtually all of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s monitoring equipment installed under the 2015 deal with world powers over its nuclear program.
At the same time, Macron also called for the release of four French citizens who he said were “arbitrarily detained” in Iran.
