France: Macron will appoint former health minister Veran as government representative

LAST UPDATE: 10.22

French President Emmanuel Macron will appoint his former health minister, Olivier Veran, as the new government spokesman, BFM TV reported today, ahead of a wider government reshuffle expected to be announced later today.

Veran is a technocrat who rose to public prominence as health minister during the Covid-19 pandemic and guided the country through most of the health crisis.

The new appointments will also include emergency medicine doctor Fran Bron as health minister, while Christophe Besi, the current undersecretary for local authority relations, will take over the environment portfolio, BFM TV reported, which did not say its sources.

Current European Affairs Minister Clement Bonn will take over as Transport Minister, BFM TV added.

The reshuffle became necessary for Emmanuel Macron after some ministers were defeated last month in French parliamentary elections, forcing them to resign, according to French political tradition.

Some cabinet posts were also vacant following Macron’s re-election in April.
