France: New record with over 270,000 cases of coronavirus in 24 hours

LAST UPDATE 22:00

More than 270,000 cases of Covid-19 have been reported in France in the last 24 hours, a new record amid a full-blown outbreak of the Omicron variant, the country’s health authorities announced today.

Specifically, 271,686 cases were counted in 24 hours, according to data released today by the French National Health Authority.

Earlier in the day, Health Minister Olivier Veran spoke of a number not far from the 300,000 infections.

The last record was in late December, with just over 230,000 new cases in one day.

These numbers indicate the extent of the current wave of the epidemic. This has been going on since the fall and revived in late 2021 with the arrival of the Omicron variant.

The impact on hospitals has already been felt, with 2881 admissions in one day, according to Santé publique France. Within 24 hours, hospitals recorded 297 deaths.

The increase in recorded cases is partly explained by an unprecedented number of PCR tests: eight million last week, according to Veran.

However, the epidemic outbreak is real, as evidenced by the surge in the “positivity rate”. It exceeded 15%, close to the record levels of autumn 2020.
