France: Paris wants sanctions on ‘dozens more’ of Putin’s inner circle

France will submit to the European Union “several dozen” additional names of the close circle of Russian President Vladimir Putin to be added to the list of those who have been sanctioned in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, French Finance Minister Bruno Lemerre said today.

“We will transfer several dozen names of Russian persons to the European Commission to be subject to sanctions,” the minister told the LCI news network ahead of meetings between eurozone and EU finance ministers.

The French financial intelligence services have identified these individuals or their relatives as having assets in France, he added.

The EU has already imposed sanctions on several hundred Russian and Belarusian individuals and entities close to the Moscow regime since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and has imposed economic and financial sanctions that have caused the ruble to collapse.

The G7 and the EU also announced on Friday that they intend to ban the export of European luxury goods to Russia or even exclude Moscow from the clause of the rather favorable state that governs world trade, paving the way for the imposition of punitive customs duties.

“We are dealing a blow to the Russian economy,” Bruno Lemerre said, adding that “all options are on the table” to strengthen the sanctions that have already been imposed.
