Two pilots of Air France were suspended after they were previously caught red-handed in the cockpit on a Geneva-Paris flight in June, an official with the French airline said on Sunday. The flight continued normally and the airplane landed safely despite the pilots’ skirmish, the official said, underscoring Air France’s commitment to safety.
According to the Swiss newspaper “La Tribune” the pilot and the co-pilot had a dispute shortly after take-off and grabbed each other’s collar while a stick was also used. The cabin crew intervened and one member was forced to spend the rest of the flight in the cockpit with the pilots, the Guardian.
News of the fight comes after a report by France’s aviation investigation agency BEA on Wednesday said “some Air France pilots are not following the strict procedures in place during incidents security». The report focused on a fuel spill on an Air France flight from Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo to Paris in December 2020, when the pilots rerouted the plane but did not cut power to the engine or land as soon as possible, as required the leakage process. The plane landed safely in Chad, but the BEA report warned that the engine could have caught fire.
It cited three similar cases between 2017 and 2022 where some pilots acted on their own analysis of the situation rather than following safety protocols, he noted.
On their part, the trade unions Air France pilots insisted that safety is paramount for all pilots and defended themselves the actions of pilots in emergency situations.
