France: Police evacuate people from the banks of the Seine

French police evacuated the river today Seine in the center of Paris due to concerns that people are getting too close to each other and do not follow the rules of social distancing to stop the coronavirus epidemic.

Hundreds of people were evacuated from the area – which is especially popular for walks and picnics on sunny days – and police cordoned off the river for the rest of the day.

“Social distancing is not being observed,” police warned over a loudspeaker.

The French government has avoided re-quarantining the capital and surrounding areas despite rising coronavirus cases and a growing number of hospitalized patients.

However, in Paris there is a curfew from 6 pm to 6 am.

French health authorities announced today 23,306 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, slightly less than the 23,507 yesterday, Friday. There were also 170 new deaths, bringing the total to 88,444 deaths from the disease in France. The number of patients admitted to the intensive care unit increased by 9 and amounts to 3,689.
