France: Presidential candidate Yannick Zando accuses Total of ‘complicity’ in Russian ‘war crimes’

The candidate of the Ecologists in the presidential elections, Yannick Zando, today denounced the presence of the French energy giant TotalEnergies in Russia, saying that he is “complicit” in the “war crimes” committed by Moscow after the invasion of Ukraine.

“It is a shame for our country that a large national group is an accomplice in war crimes. I ask the President of the Republic to impose the withdrawal of Total from Russia,” Zando said in a campaign speech in Bordeaux.

“We are facing a deviation, a complete humiliation. President Macron was the one who signed all the Total contracts in Russia and today one of the last major oil companies (remaining in Russia) is the French one,” he insisted. “We can not be complicit in the war crimes that are being committed there,” he said.

In order to break free from Russian gas, Zando, an MEP, reiterated his proposal to set up a single European buyer body that would be able to secure the best prices from other suppliers. He also defended the placement of “photovoltaic panels” on the hundreds of thousands of flat roofs “of buildings throughout our territory in Europe” because this renewable energy source is “the only peaceful and safe”.

On March 1, TotalEnergies announced that it would no longer invest in new business plans in Russia, but did not withdraw from those in which it has already invested.
